RIACS Smart XML Technology Featured at AIIM Expo

Joint conference session with Xerox describes the benefits and advantages of Smart XML

Smart XML Technology developed with NASA was the focus of a conference session given by RIACS and Xerox at the AIIM expo in Boston this week. Entitled ‘How Smart XML Technology Makes Documents Smarter’, the conference session was presented by RIACS Director Dr. David Bell and David Smith, Vice President of the DocuShare Business Unit at Xerox.

Using a case study in using Smart XML technology in business critical applications, Dr. Bell described how NASA is leveraging this technology to improve operations and manage performance.

One example is NASA’s Performance Management Tool (PMT), an enterprise level business intelligence tool which leverages Smart XML to integrate Oracle and SAP business data with data collected in documents by users. Using standardized documents as the interface, users can collect data away from the network and then upload the documents into PMT when they return. The data in the documents is then integrated into PMT and made available for reuse through search-based document composition. This technique allows search queries to generate standard Microsoft Office documents that users can then take to presentations, meetings or wherever they may need them.

Using documents as the primary interface to the system provides several benefits, including the elimination of errors due to copy and pasting inaccurate or incomplete information, enabling an online-offline workflow so that users can continue working while away from the office or network, and making reporting processes much more timely and efficient.
